Lyoness agiert weltweit in 47 Standorten.

“Our own IT-Projects are viewed as worldwide benchmarks.”

As a part of the global shopping-community with around six million members and 70,000 chain stores and online shops, the Lyoness Group AG acts as a specialized IT system house, offering central solutions for the entire corporate group.

Economy talked with the CIO Siegfried Unz about the combination from b2b and b2c, about own IT-Projects as worldwide benchmarks and about Innovation as impetus for business.

Economy: Beside of the worldwide shopping-community, Lyoness is also a business-platform with 70.000 stores, online-shops and SME as partners. Which challenges are there, especially according to the combination between the parts business-to-business and business-to-consumer?
Siegfried Unz: It’s interesting from a technical view to combine the different requirements of both user groups.

Can you give us a picture of how Lyoness IT-infrastructure is organised, how many machines and softwares are in use?
In all, around 100 physical and 300 virtualised servers, 50 software products, databases in the terabyte range and backup volumes of 60 TB per week are involved.

Which technologies has Lyoness used over the last few years, and which technological milestones have been/are relevant?
I started 2008 at Lyoness, 2009 we started to virtualise our server environment (VMware) and to migrate to a server housing. In a next step all these installations have been developed on the basis of Microsoft and .NET.
In the meantime important steps are also Cloud-Solutions or the sms-area, like our solutions from atms. Another important aspect are communications, whereby we rely on internally maintained systems. Our innovatory telephone solutions with Innovaphone and Voxtron are viewed as worldwide benchmarks in the customer service sector.
A very important topic for us is security, here we use the newest web applications and firewall products, supplemented by DDoS systems.

Lyoness is a global company with 47 locations. How can we imagine the technical structure including to all those branches?
The exciting point is, we are talking about 20 time zones. The technologies directly at the branche are relatively simple, all the things are provided central.

Generally speaking, how do you justify the purchase of new technologies?
Lyoness is a very innovative company. Mostly new orders are coming from the distribution, then we have to support new technologies like mobile solutions, payment-solutions and more of that.
But there are also technologic reasons, coming from the technic like new authentificational systems or similar.

Which challenges generally crop up during implementation processes?
Our main challenge, which is also a strength, is multilingualism. We have to deal with up to 40 languages. With internal projects, we can react very quickly, but external suppliers are often overwhelmed.

Timeline, how long does implementation generally take, fore example, a small and a large project?
Small projects can be done within a month, larger projects need betwenn 6 and 10 month.

Which economic parameters does Lyoness establish for a new IT solution?
Return-on-Investment (ROI) calculations are certainly one of the most important parameters.

How does Lyoness act about choosing a technology partner?
Lyoness is not an easy customer, we are very ‘know-how’ driven and demand this professional attitude from our IT partners as well.
It is the best to be involved with cutting-edge technologies right from the start and to have suitable references from other customers.
